What You Shouldn’t Miss in Pomorie, Bulgaria – The Pomoriisko Lake
Pomorie, Bulgaria is a destination worth to be visited by alternative tourism enthusiasts, as well as those, looking for a summer holiday at the sea in the end of August. It is situated between Bourgas (20km away) and Sunny Beach (18km away), on a narrow rocky peninsula, jutting out 3.5km into Black Sea. The resorts Sozopol and Nessebar are also situated nearby. The Pomoriisko lake is situated 2km nearby, covering an area of 850 hectares. It has an elongated shape and is 6.7km long and 2km wide. The lake is separated from the sea with a sand bar and an artificial dike. A canal in its southern part supplies it with waters from the Black Sea. The water in the lake is four times saltier than in the sea.
The eco festival “The Magic of the Pomoriisko Lake” is held in the end of August. Different eco-initiatives are held for two days for the tourist to participate in, and all are connected with the salt lagoon of the Primorsko Lake: alternative sports, alternative tourism and safari by the lake, mud baths with healing mud, seeing the bio-variety of the local flora and fauna, exhibition of products, gathered from the lake and its beauty.
Why is it necessary to preserve a lake, that has been used for millenniums by people and birds, the biggest lake in Bulgaria – these questions are to be answered by the eco-festival.
Birds that fly from Europe to Africa won’t be able to land in the midway, if the artificial lagoon vanishes. The Pomoriisko Lake is situated in the second biggest migratory way – Via Pontika, which is a protected area.
The lake is useful for people for gathering salt, using the salt for healing discal hernia, sciatica, lumbago, radiculitis, arthritis, rheumatism, etc.
Tourists can also visit: the museum of salt; the protected area “Blatno Kokiche” (“Swamp Snowdrop”, covering an area of 2.0 hectares and situated near the Goritsa village); the “Koriyata” nature site (situated near the Galabets village); the “St. George” monastery; the “Old Pomorian Houses” architectural preserve; the “Preobrajenie Gospodne” (“Transfiguration”) church, dated from XVIII century; the “St. Rojdestvo Bogorodichno” church (XIXc.); the Thracian vault tomb.
