The Supreme Flora and Fauna of Bulgaria - Malak Preslavets

Nature enthusiasts are sure to be interested about new and undiscovered places to see. In this article we are going to present you an attractive area, where man can meet nature in Malak Preslavets, Bulgaria. In the past this area attracted many people from different nations, which setteled there and used the natural sources, but however, nowadays the area is not frequently visited. This is the protected area “The Malak Preslavets Marsh”, situated near the Malak Preslavets village and the Danube River, 53km west from Silistra and 30km west from the Srebarna preserve. The territory, that it covers is only 385 decares, but is extremely impregnated with supreme flower plants – 177 species, which represents 4.8% of the supreme flora of Bulgaria. A variety of plants (due to examination) is present, because of the clean unpolluted area.  Here are some of the protected species, included in the Red Book of Bulgaria: Rootless Walter Meal (Wolffia arrhiza), Gibbous Duckweed (Lemna gibba), Small Pondweed (Potamogeton pussilus), Cowslip (Primula veris), Cyclamen coum, Loddon Lily (Leucojum aestivum), Western Waterweed (Elodea nuttallii), etc.

The White water-lily covers the largest area – 46 decares of the water surface, which gives the population the ability for main nesting species: The Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybridus), The Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), The Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra). The growth of abundant flora is caused by the depth of the marsh and the forest, situated in its western part. Prevalent species are 16 fish species. The most numerous are the populations of rudds (Scardinius Erythropthalmus), roaches (Rutilus rutilus), Crucian carps (Carassius carassius), perches (Perca fluviatilis), European weather fish (Misgurnus fossilis) and Spine loach (Cobitis taenia).

The protected area is populated by nine species of amphibians of which the most dominant is the big water frog. Sparse are the  Fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) and 10 species reptiles – Dice snake (Natrix tesselata), Grass snake (Natrix natrix) and the Eastern green lizard (Lacerta viridis).

82 of the 147 species of birds present are nesting. The protected ones are the Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), the White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) and the Pygmy cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus), the Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis).
