Ice and Snow causing Accidents and Chaos in the UK
The UK is in chaos after several days of intense winter weather and snowfall.
Many roads in the worst affected parts of the country are littered with abandoned vehicles. Many were attempting to retrieve their vehicles as temperatures began to increase a little today. A number of people are reported to have been trapped in their cars overnight in sub zero temperatures.
Public transport systems have also been disrupted. Eurostar train services from Europe suffered a number of break downs due to snow getting into the train power systems. Around 2000 unfortunate travellers found themselves trapped for 16 hours in the dark tunnel under the English Channel. Some passengers reported suffering from claustrophobia, some from panic attacks and many have complained about the lack of information.
Eurostar report that they are now returning to a normal high speed train service, after three days out of action. They now have huge passenger backlogs to deal with in both France and the UK.
As the cold wintery weather persists the National Health Service have advised people to stay at home and only go outdoors if their journey is essential. This advice came after hospital accident and emergency departments reported record numbers of people requiring attention for injuries sustained as a result of falls on icy pavements.
With Christmas only days away many people need to visit their local towns in order to complete their pre-christmas shopping. This is forcing people to leave their homes and venture forth onto treacherous pavements.
Many are already discussing how well and how badly the UK has coped in this latest wave of bad winter weather. Local councils have been quick to treat main road surfaces with grit and salt but many smaller side roads and pavements have remained untreated.
In February 2009 the UK was plunged into icy Arctic conditions when winter weather caused traffic chaos, school closures and disruption on a massive scale. This latest bought of bad weather is prompting many to ask if the UK is really capable of dealing with cold winter weather.
