Climbing Machu Picchu – Peru Holidays

When you go to Peru most people’s first thoughts aren’t of trekking up the side of a mountain but this is exactly what adventurous travellers on active holidays do on a regular basis. As far as walking holidays the Inca Trail, which is the ancient path that leads up to Machu Picchu offers an experience like no other. You will find that although there are many high altitude and exhilarating treks worldwide none compare to the mystic walk to Machu Picchu. With a road that is 500 year old you really don’t get a more historic or mysterious atmosphere when walking the Inca Trail anywhere else on the globe.

The temple that was Machu Picchu was built as a fortress as well as a place of worship. 4,000 feet up on a mountain side to build a temple is quite a tough thing to do so you can only imagine how difficult this was back in the time of the Mayan reign.

It’s a 40 mile walk that will take you several days to complete and the going could be tough but it is definitely an experience worth having. The air will be thin at these altitudes so try not to tax your body too much a slow and steady pace will help you over the course of your trek. However while it can be exhausting it gives you a real feel for the beautiful country of Peru.

Beware of altitude sickness and take it easy because there is no structure in place to take care of you if you start feeling ill while on the trail. You will need to take a professional guide on the Inca Trail as thge autorities have said the walk is too dangerous to go alone.

Peru holidays are life changing experiences so if you don’t want to exhaust yourself traking the ancient trail the Mayans took then there is always the train which will only take a day of your time and allow you to see the magnificent ruins on Machu Picchu.
