Chlorine is Not the Only Way to a Sanitary Pool
Chlorine tablets are not the only way to sanitize a swimming pool.
To sanitize their pools many people choose other methods to chlorine because they do not like it’s toxicity and odor. On a regular basis it is not environmentally sensitive to use a lot of strong chemicals. Also, most people prefer the feel and taste of a non-chlorinated pool.
Salt Generators
A tiny bit of salt added in the pool is changed into chlorine by salt generators. Chlorine need not be routinely added. If the pool becomes dirty a treatment with chlorine or other oxidizing chemical will be needed. With salt generators the ph tends to get high so it needs to be analyzed regularly. It can be lowered with muriatic acid.
Bromine is more expensive than chlorine and needs to be added more often because it burns off quickly in sunlight but it is nice for sensitive skin and has no bad smell. Chlorine becomes deactivated when it mixes with harmful contaminants where as bromine continues to work.
Ozone
Impurities react with ozone, a form of oxygen which is active. When the ozone gas dissolves in water it combines with pollutants and oxidizes them the same way as chlorine. Because it makes them join together, they are easily removed form filters. You can cut chlorine use by 60% to 90%.
Copper and Silver
It is widely known that copper kills algae and silver kills bacteria and viruses. They have long been used to clean water. After ionization by a very small amount of electricity copper and silver react with the pollutants in the water destroying them.
For easier removal from the filter the bacteria and algae adhere together. Regular chlorine tabletsusage will be greatly reduced but a periodic shock of the pool with chlorine or a non-chlorine oxidizer will be needed.
Summary
Many people are tired of continually fighting algae, swimming on a regular basis in harsh chemicals, and paying for the amount of swimming pool chemical products needed to keep the swimming pool clean so they turn to alternate pool sanitizers. The options are there and a web search will help you find more detailed information if you want to find out more.
